Heart of TWR Awards
The Heart of TWR Awards exist to celebrate the Run Angels — the literal heart of This Woman Runs.
Run Angels are the volunteers who show up, week after week, to lead runs, welcome new faces, create safe spaces and build communities where women can move, connect and belong.
The Heart of TWR Awards are our way of recognising the women who give so much time and energy to support others through running.
Nominated by the TWR community each month, our winners embody the values that define Run Angels: kindness, inclusivity, encouragement and consistency. Their impact goes far beyond the miles they cover.
Delivered in partnership with Vitality, Heart of TWR sits at the centre of a wider package of support created specifically for Run Angels. This includes welcome packs, branded T-shirts, monthly content and ongoing recognition — alongside the Vitality Heart of TWR monthly award. Each winner receives a bundle of well-earned treats, including a Garmin watch and a relaxing break for two at Champneys spa, as a thank you for the energy, care and commitment they bring to the TWR community.
Heart of TWR: Rachael James
Bristol Run Angel

Rachael has been part of This Woman Runs from the very beginning - before it even had a name. After seeing Mel’s original post looking for women to run with, Rachael decided to show up for that very first run. She hadn’t run since having her children, but something about the invitation felt right. That decision sparked a journey that would see her become one of the most consistent, caring and influential Run Angels in the Bristol community. After more than a year of running regularly with the Greville Smyth group, Rachael wanted to give something back. When volunteers were needed to help lead runs, she put her hand up - a moment she now describes as one of the best decisions she’s ever made. Leading with care, consistency and heart Being a Run Angel means a huge amount to Rachael. She loves supporting women in whatever way they need on the day - whether that’s gentle encouragement to get out the door, company on a tough run, discovering new routes, or simply having fun together. Her role goes far beyond leading the run itself. Rachael plans routes, welcomes new runners, leads warm-ups and cool-downs, keeps everyone safe, and makes sure no one gets left behind. She’s also famous for taking her selfie duties seriously - determined to capture each run as a moment worth remembering. Over the years, she’s shared countless memorable moments with the community, from fancy-dress runs like the Weston Christmas Cracker and the Nightingale Nightmare, to racing alongside friends. But her proudest moments are always about others: watching women complete their first 5k, 10k, half marathon, marathon - and even ultramarathons. One especially meaningful memory for Rachael was running alongside Gina Jennings as she completed her very first 10k - one of many moments that quietly capture the difference she makes. What TWR has given her Through TWR, Rachael has rediscovered her own running, improved her health, and gained a deeper belief in what she’s capable of - including completing two marathons, something she never imagined before joining the community. Just as importantly, running has helped her stay grounded, and she hopes her children see her as a positive example of movement, confidence and perseverance. Her advice to anyone thinking of joining TWR is simple: come along and try a group run - you’ll love it, and the Run Angels will make sure you’re looked after. And for those considering becoming a Run Angel themselves? Go for it. Supporting other women in this way, Rachael says, is one of the most rewarding things you can do - and you’ll never be doing it alone.
A ripple effect across the community
Rachael’s impact is felt far beyond a single run. Women regularly talk about the time, care and encouragement she gives - and the confidence she helps build.
“She was my first Run Angel and continues to be a fab Angel years later. She’s so consistently available… I’ve made so many friends because of her.”
“Rachael has been the run angel coordinator at Greville Smyth for years. She’s always friendly, always available, and provides support and friendship to us all.”
She’s also inspired others to step into leadership themselves.
“Rachael is the reason I became a Run Angel and Runmaker. She’s inspired me in so many ways and keeps our group strong and positive.”
“She’s a brilliant example of what a Run Angel should be - warm, welcoming, supportive, and leading from the back so no one gets left behind.”
